Can we have CCTV Please

The news that the Delhi government is going to install CCTV cameras in all the classrooms of various Delhi Govt schools and that the parents should be given access to see the classroom processes, is making headlines in the media.

Professor Krishna Kumar has written a very well-thought piece arguing against the installation of CCTV cameras in Delhi Government Schools. In principle, no one can challenge the stand Prof. Kumar has taken in his article for Indian Express.

Most of the teachers, I meet these days have been turning euphoric thanks to the recent decision of introducing board exams for junior classes. This news is being received with such euphoria that it is being welcomed as nothing less than a ‘golden era’ in education! The level of excitement has personally left me wondering about how such a significant percentage of teachers are supporting the introduction of board exam in junior classes. A social science teacher in the classroom is like an unwanted guest. Students keep asking the time and they immediately inform the teacher once the bell rings. The expression on their face is evident that they don’t welcome the teacher. In the parent’s teacher meeting parents meets the other teachers but often ignore meeting the social science teacher. They are more concerned about the performance of their wards in ‘core’ subjects like Math, science and English.

कार्य कुशल होना, कार्य में गुणवत्ता लाना, सतत एक जैसा प्रदर्शन करते रहना, इन विचारों ने मुझे बहुत दिनों तक आकर्षित किया | कई तरह के प्रयोग भी मैंने किए, कुछ मामूली सफलता के बाद उसमें निराशा ही हाथ लगी | एक और वाक्य है जो मुझे बहूत आकर्षित करता है “ Institutionalize your life “ अर्थात जीवन को एक संस्था में परिवर्तित कर देना | सतही तौर पर ये सभी वाक्य काफी आकर्षक लगते हैं | विचारों के इस चक्र से बाहर निकलना भी काफी मुश्किल है | हम जितना ज्यादा कार्य कुशल होते हैं , सतत एक जैसा प्रदर्शन करते हैं उतनी ही हमें तारीफ मिलती है | हम अपने छात्रों से भी इसी तरह की उम्मीद करते हैं | छात्र भी अपने जीवन
